In some cases it can be caused by an allergic reaction to food or its environment, while in other cases it could be because of a behavioral problem such as obsessive licking. If your puppy experiences hair loss, it is important to have it checked by a veterinarian so that the appropriate method of treatment can be prescribed as soon as possible.

Steroid Treatment

Steroids may be prescribed if your puppy is experiencing hair loss brought on by allergies, a parasitic infection, a reaction in the skin caused by sun exposure, or because of a failure in the sebaceous glands.

Medicated Shampoo Treatment

Most diseases and skin disorders characterized by redness, scaling and itching can be treated with medicated shampoo. These include parasitic infections such as ringworm, failure of the sebaceous glands and hereditary diseases that cause a loss of all dark and black hair. Allergies, oily or greasy skin, and certain kinds of tumors, such as testicular ones, may also cause hair loss in areas that can be treated with medicated shampoo.

Treatment for Underlying Disease

Often, to clear up skin disorders, you must combat an underlying disease first. Diabetes, hormonal abnormalities, liver disease, cancer and hypothyroidism can all lead to skin disorders and hair loss as they progress.

Antibiotic Treatment

Some skin problems must be treated with antibiotics. Parasites such as ringworm and lice can be treated this way, as well as sarcoptic mange, pressure sores and infections of the hair follicles.

Other Types of Treatment

Some disorders that cause hair loss in puppies must be treated in a way unique to the disorder. If a puppy loses its hair because of food or environment allergies, you must change its diet, bedding and crate area until the problem is cleared up. If your puppy has a problem with excessive licking, you will need to try behavior modification techniques to break him of this. You may also need to use a collar so that he cannot lick themselves further.

Water Safety For Your Dog

By: Tristan Andrews
Summer is a great time to enjoy the water with your dog. ">dog probably wants to do these things with you. But, do you know how to keep your dog safe in the water?

Many dogs are natural swimmers but that doesn't mean that yours is. There are many dogs that have some natural fear of the water. That means that you can't just assume that the first time you take your dog out to the lake or even the swimming pool that he will hop in and start dog paddling.

You should also keep in mind that dogs come in all shapes and sizes. It's not easy for some dogs to swim because of the way they're built. The Newf and the Lab carry a little extra fat that can keep them warm in cold water. The Lab has a tail like a rudder to help him in the water. The Portuguese Water Dog has webbing on his paws that helps him paddled in the water. Not all dogs are built to be champion swimmers like these dogs.

If you plan to have your dog near the water the first thing you should do is buy him a proper life jacket for dogs. Yes! They do make life vests for dogs! They are made from the same material as the life vests for humans. You can order them online or you may find them in a pet superstore.

Choose a life vest for your dog that is brightly colored. You want to be able to see your dog if he is out in the water away from you. Make sure that you get a vest that fits your dog well. The vest will have straps that fit around your dog in several places.

Once you and your dog are near the water you can help your dog learn to swim by slowly walking him into the water. Don't force him to go deeper than he wants to go. Most dogs will catch on and enjoy themselves. Dogs actually do dog paddle. But you shouldn't make your dog go into the water if he doesn't want to go. Remember to stay close by in case your dog has any problems. This is true whether you are swimming in a pool or any other small body of water.

It's particularly important with pools for you to teach your dog how to find the side so he can get out on his own. Many dogs drown each year because they don't know how to get out of the pool. If your dog can't find the steps then he may drown because he's stuck in the water. Swim with your dog to the side of the pool where the steps are and help your dog find the steps with his legs. Show him how to step out of the pool and make sure that you see him do this.

NEVER allow a dog to swim unattended. If you have a pool you should always keep a gate to the pool closed or keep the pool otherwise off-limits to your dog.

Swimming is a lot of fun for dogs but dogs can and do drown. Which type of Iams dog food you choose will depend on your pet's breed, size and health. Each dry food formula comes in different kibble sizes, including MiniChunk for smaller dogs. Ingredients vary drastically in the various Iams formulas, so a little research will pinpoint the best formula for your dog.

Perks

Iams offers several formulas in the mid-range price level. "They were really nice puppies … but I couldn't keep all of them," he said.
Yesterday, Mr. Cunningham recalled how on Feb. 26 he took 10 of the pups - then about 8 weeks old and all seemingly healthy - to the Lucas County pound. He surrendered the dogs to the office of Dog Warden Tom Skeldon expecting that each and every one would find a new, caring home.
"I was under the impression that the puppies had a good chance of being adopted out because they're puppies," said Mr. Cunningham, recalling how the staff at the dog pound oohed and aahed over the cute pups.
But none made it out of the warden's kennel. According to the agency's surrender logs - all 10 puppies were killed the day after Mr. Cunningham dropped them off.
Mr. Cunningham was shocked and distraught yesterday to learn from The Blade that Mr. Skeldon killed every puppy he brought in. He said he always assumed they found new homes.

"We were all under the impression that these puppies would get a chance to make it," he said.

Zoom | Photo Reprints
For Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop, who tried unsuccessfully this month to fire Mr. Skeldon for the hundreds of adoptable dogs he's killed, the quick deaths of the 10 puppies further demonstrates the need for immediate changes at the warden's office.
"It makes me physically ill to think the county is in some sense sanctioning this behavior," the commissioner said. "There is no excuse for this. To me it shows beyond a reasonable doubt why there needs to be changes in leadership at the dog warden."
Mr. Skeldon yesterday did not return repeated requests for comment throughout the day on puppy killing at the pound.
Records documenting the fate of the 10 puppies were also faxed to the warden's attention yesterday morning, but he refused to come to the phone when called by a reporter.
Commissioner Konop also accused the warden of violating the written agreement on puppy surrender forms by killing the pups the day after they arrived. That document, signed by owners who surrender dogs to the pound, states, "I understand that the dog described, if not suitable for sale, may be humanely destroyed."
"I can't imagine any logical reason to kill 10 healthy, non-"pit bull" puppies less than 24 hours after they were turned in," Mr. Konop said. "It's disgusting."
A temporary moratorium on nearly all puppy killings at the pound was one of three recommendations endorsed last week by the county's Dog Warden Advisory Committee. Commissioners have yet to act on the recommendations or be formally presented with them, officials said.
So far this year, records show that 78 puppies have been killed at the county dog pound, most so-called "pit bull" puppies that Mr. Skeldon kills because he considers them "vicious" under Ohio law.
Pete Gerken, president of the commissioners and a backer of Mr. Skeldon, also refused to return calls from The Blade.
Of puppy euthanasia in general, Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak, the warden's first cousin, issued the following statement:
"All of the commissioners are committed to increasing the number of dogs adopted and decreasing the number euthanized. That's why we are working closely with our Dog Warden Advisory Committee to identify changes that will achieve these objectives. … I hope that all dog owners will remember to get their dog spayed or neutered so we can control our overall pet population and prevent unnecessary euthanasia."
One of Mr. Cunningham's puppies found a new home, while he kept one of the stray's 12 puppies for himself, saving its life. That dog, Bailey, is growing into a friendly, healthy, and smart adult dog with a few lovable quirks.
"One ear sticks up like a shepherd, the other flops down like a chow," he said with a laugh.
Contact JC Reindl at:
jreindl@theblade.com
or 419-724-6065.

Saturday event helps cute and needy animals in Old Fort

Healing Hearts Small Animal Rescue

By Britt Combs | The McDowell News

Published: November 12, 2009

People with a penchant for philanthropy can pet plenty of pretty puppies and peruse a plethora of paraphernalia for purchase Saturday in Old Fort.

The Healing Hearts Small Animal Rescue benefit sale takes place Saturday at the Old Fort Depot from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Healing Hearts director Vicky Tate said the fundraiser is a semi-annual event that is vital to the work the group accomplishes every day; providing relief, comfort and care to many of the community's neediest, most vulnerable -- and cuddliest -- creatures.

She said there were hundreds of great items offered for sale, including the ever-popular and often very hard to find toddlers' and kids' shoes and clothing.

"We have bathroom items (including sinks and other hardware), clothing, household items and lots of Christmas decorations," she stated Wednesday.

There will also be baked goods (yum!), delightful scented candles and healing Hearts tee shirts available.

Bring the kids, because some of the beneficiaries of the group's work will be there to say a special thank-you for supporting the group's work. That's right, dogs and cats will be available for petting, play, or even adoption throughout the fundraiser.

Four-legged guests include Cassie, a furry white bundle of canine cuteness who lost an eye and will need surgery soon. She is a delight to be around and makes friends wherever she goes. There will be a bunny, Tate said, who had adoption pending at press time, but will attend the fundraiser if there's a delay.

"One or two of our boxers" will also be available for petting, she added, so "there goes the whole 'small animal' thing." There will also be a cat who lost his eyes to an infection as a kitten. While strictly an indoor kitty, Tate said, he is well adjusted, playful and fully house-trained.

And of course, there's Willie, a special Chihuahua who weighs a mere two pounds, due to stunted growth caused by a respiratory infection as a pup. He has passed through a lot of challenges but, after three months, he has won a lot of hearts and become a shining example of the care, attention and loving healing Tate and her associates are known for.

Obama's Dog

After months of researching for just the right pet, the family chose the Portuguese Water Dog Breed because of Malia’s allergies. As the public anxiously awaited arrival of the First Dog, the Obamas had a dilemma. They also wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter but their chosen breed is rarely found in shelters. However, it turns out the new First Dog may be considered a rescue after all. When Senator Ted Kennedy learned that the six month old littermate of one his own

It seems the pup is a Texan from the Amigo Portuguese Water Dog kennel near Dallas. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Obamas will also make a donation to a humane society to ease the disappointment of not getting a dog from a shelter.

Although the six month old fluffy pup’s registered name is Amigo’s New Hope and he was called Charlie in his first home, the Obama girls will call him Bo, after their grandfather who had the nickname “Diddley” as in Bo Diddley. Interestingly, the two letters of his name also spell the initials of Barack Obama.

Described by the American Kennel Club as intelligent, obedient, and resistant to fatigue, the Portuguese Water Dog breed promises to make a wonderful companion to the Obama family.

Welcome to the daily cute puppies!

When cute puppies play with each other, they use their mouths a lot. When they play with you or when they are petted, they usually want to bite or "mouth," too. This behavior is not frankly aggressive at this stage – though it may be pre-aggressive.

There are two different life stages in which mouthiness can be an issue – before maturity and after maturity. The pre-maturity variety, all too often not taken seriously, and misguidedly interpreted as cute puppies play, leads to the adult version.

Bear in mind that it is easier to "nip" the problem in the bud at this stage by training cute puppies what is and is not acceptable behavior. Even if the behavior has been permitted to flourish into adult maturity, it is still possible to take corrective measures.

Training for cute puppies

Training cute puppies is not always easy: it requires a lot of work, as they do not know right from wrong and must rely on the owner for guidance. Often, aggressive or skittish adult dogs can be blamed on the owner's lack of discipline and training. It is critical for puppies socialization that they interact often with humans and be exposed to a variety of objects and situations.

Training of basic obedience can begin at the same time, although recommendations for how intense and how soon vary. Training for young puppies is generally recommended to be light, gentle, and fun; more like a game than an exercise. Most formal cute puppies classes accept cute puppies starting at three months of age, although some provide socialization classes for younger pups. Local dog trainers may also offer some in-home training for cute puppies.

Housebreaking can begin by the time the puppy is two to three months old, although they usually do not have enough control of their bladder to be completely housebroken until they are six months to a year old. Some find that using training of cute puppies pads is an effective method of housebreaking. Others prefer to use a crate training method.
